Healthy Carrot Biscuits: A BLW-Friendly Snack

Healthy Carrot Biscuits: A BLW-Friendly Snack

Making 50 delicious and healthy carrot biscuits has never been easier! This BLW (Baby-Led Weaning) friendly snack is suitable for little ones aged 6 months and older, but it's so tasty that everyone in the family will love it.

This recipe was written by our friend Cat @little.vegan.eats to celebrate the launch of our new lunch bag range! Cat chose carrot as the hero ingredient for this recipe because she was inspired by the tones in our gingham print.

Let's show you how to whip up these delightful carrot biscuits that are perfect for snacking.

Ingredients

  • Main Ingredients

    • 200g of steamed carrot (approx 1.5 large carrots)
    • 1.25 cups/200g of self-raising flour
  • Spices and Flavors

    • 1 tsp of cinnamon
    • 1 tsp of ground ginger
    • 1/2 tsp of nutmeg
  • Additions

    • 1/3 cup/50g of raisins (chop for babies under 18 months)
    • 1/4 cup/60ml of coconut oil (melted; can sub with olive, avocado, or grapeseed oil or melted vegan butter)

Note: Cut the spices in half if your little one is new to them.

How to Prepare

  1. In a large bowl, mash the carrot with a fork to remove any lumps.
  2. Add all of the remaining ingredients and mix together to form a dough. It will be sticky, but knead with your hands, and it will come together (you may need a tiny bit more flour if your carrot has a higher water content, though).
  3. Place the dough on baking paper and roll the dough to approximately 1/2 a cm in thickness.
  4. Use cookie cutters or a knife to cut out the biscuits. Remove any excess dough, and roll that out, repeating until there is no dough left (this will make around 50 biscuits).
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F then bake for 10 minutes (+/- a couple of minutes depending on your oven).
  6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving.

Storage Tips

Store these delightful carrot biscuits in a container on the bench for 3 days, in the fridge for a week, or freeze for up to 2 months. Keep in mind that they contain coconut oil, so they will be harder if served cold (you can warm them up if serving straight from the fridge).

For babies under 12 months, cut them into two-finger-width strips to make them easier to hold and reduce choking hazards. You can also omit the sultanas to make these sugar-free for babies under 12 months.
