10 Tips for Baby's First Outing to the Beach

Are you thinking about taking your little one to the beach for the first time? My two little ones are both absolute beach babes, so I'd love to share my knowledge with you.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Plan a local beach trip for the morning, when the sun is less intense and the water is generally calmer. Keep the trip short, perhaps just an hour or two, to avoid tiring out your little one.
  2. Introduce them to the water slowly. Choose an area that is calm and fairly flat, rather than heading straight into the waves as this may scare them! You can also choose to have a small paddle pool, or just dip their toes into the water.
  3. Babies under 6 months of age aren’t able to wear sunscreen due to the sensitivity of their skin, so make sure they’re well covered with SPF-rated clothing, cheeks are covered with a wide brim hat and keep them cool. Bamboo clothing is a great option as its both breathable and lightweight.
  4. Remember to keep your baby hydrated, especially on warm days. Offer breastmilk or formula on demand, and bring plenty of water for yourself as well. You don't want anyone getting dehydrated on the beach!
  5. Pack a beach bag with everything you'll need for the day, including plenty of nappies, wipes, and a change of clothes. It's always a good idea to be prepared for any accidents or spills.
  6. Use a beach tent or umbrella to provide shade for your baby. The sun can be intense, especially during the hottest hours of the day, so it's important to keep your little one out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
  7. Keep an eye on your baby at all times, especially when they're near the water. Never leave them unattended, even for a minute.
  8. Hot tip! Protect your baby's feet from hot sand or sharp shells by investing in some cute aqua socks for them.
  9. Consider using baby-safe sunscreen if your baby is over 6 months old. Look for a sunscreen that is specifically formulated for babies and has an SPF of at least 30. Apply it to exposed skin and remember to reapply every two hours and after swimming. Set a timer so you don't forget.
  10. Bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep your baby (and yourself!) well-fed and hydrated. Pack some easy-to-grab snacks, such as fruit, crackers, and sandwiches, as well as a cooler with drinks like water, milk, and juice. Staying hydrated is especially important at the beach, where the heat and sun can cause dehydration.

By following these tips, you and your baby can have a fun and safe beach outing together. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture all the special moments!
